Why Does Being Judged Change How You Treat Yourself?

The show pen does not just measure your ride. It quietly teaches you what kind of person you think you are.

The Short Answer
Something happens between the warm-up ring and the gate.
Twenty minutes ago the horse felt good. Your hands were quiet. The transitions came up underneath you the way they do at home, unremarkable and correct. Then you turn down centerline with a person at C holding a pen, and a body you have trained for years becomes a body you are watching from somewhere slightly outside of it.
That gap has a name. Performance anxiety shows up across three channels at once: cognitive, physiological, and behavioral. Dread and self-doubt in the mind. Racing heart, tremor, memory lapses in the body. Avoidance in the behavior (Kinney et al., 2025; Gómez-López & Sánchez-Cabrero, 2023). And when the activation climbs past what a person can tolerate, technical ability can fall off a cliff, regardless of how well trained it was (Gómez-López & Sánchez-Cabrero, 2023).
But that is only the visible part, and it is not the part I find most interesting.
Here is the direct answer to the question in the title. Being judged changes how you treat yourself because human beings use social feedback to update their sense of self, not just their sense of their work (Koban et al., 2023; Albarracin et al., 2024). The score does not stay on the paper. It migrates. It becomes information about you, and once it has crossed that line, you start treating yourself the way you believe the judge treated you: conditionally, harshly, and with attention organized around not failing rather than around riding well (Lupiáñez et al., 2021; Lubert et al., 2024).
One important honesty note before we go further. The research I am drawing on studies musicians, athletes, students, and job candidates. There is very little published work on judged equestrian sport specifically. What follows is careful translation from adjacent literatures, not evidence collected in an arena, and I would rather say that plainly than dress it up.

What Actually Happens to a Rider Under Judgment?
Start with what the show pen is, structurally. Strip away the horses and it is a high-visibility evaluation setting: public, scored, and nearly impossible to stop once it has begun (Gómez-López & Sánchez-Cabrero, 2023; Guyon et al., 2020; Papageorgi et al., 2007). You cannot pause a test at movement nine to collect yourself. That irreversibility is doing more work than most people credit.
Under those conditions, attention turns inward. Judgment amplifies vigilance toward mistakes, toward your own symptoms, toward how other people are reacting to you (Kinney et al., 2025). You become preoccupied with failure, with negative evaluation, and with whether anyone can see your hands shaking, and that preoccupation feeds a loop of rumination, bodily arousal, and eventual avoidance (Kinney et al., 2025; Lupiáñez et al., 2021; Kaleńska-Rodzaj, 2020).
I want to flag one finding from the music literature that I think riders would recognize instantly. Kaleńska-Rodzaj (2020) found that young musicians who read the audience as pressuring rather than supportive, and who believed their anxiety was harmful and uncontrollable, were more likely to fall into high-anxiety emotional profiles built out of fear and sadness instead of confidence and composure. The belief about the anxiety mattered, not only the anxiety itself.
Translate that to the gate. Two riders can be equally nervous. The one who thinks "I am nervous because this matters" and the one who thinks "I am nervous, which means I am about to blow it, which means something is wrong with me" are on completely different trajectories, and the difference is not in the nervous system. It is in the interpretation.
That is also where the biggest cost usually lands. Severe performance anxiety tends to do its worst damage not through one bad ride but by building a deep aversion to performing at all (Kinney et al., 2025; Gómez-López & Sánchez-Cabrero, 2023). The goal does not get abandoned. It gets frozen. Next season. Next season. Next season.
Why Does One Score Sheet Have So Much Power Over Self-Worth?
This is the mechanism, and it is worth slowing down for.
Self-esteem appears to work something like a gauge, running in the background, tracking how well you seem to fit what your group expects and how likely you are to be accepted (Albarracin et al., 2024). When feedback suggests a mismatch, anxiety and a dip in self-esteem show up as signals that something needs updating. That system is not malfunctioning when you feel awful about a 58 percent. It is doing precisely what it evolved to do.
The trouble is that in anxious people, the gauge is calibrated badly.
Koban and colleagues (2017, 2023) found that socially anxious individuals, after being publicly evaluated, updated both their self-evaluation and their state self-esteem more from negative feedback than from positive feedback. Non-anxious controls showed the opposite pattern. The same score sheet, the same comments, and two people walk away having learned two different things about themselves.
Hopkins et al. (2021) offer a partial explanation that I find genuinely useful: the bias seems to rest on reduced positive self-belief. There is simply less positive evidence in the self-schema for good feedback to attach to. So the compliment slides off and the criticism sticks, not because the person is dramatic, but because there is nowhere for the compliment to land.
Then add contingent self-worth, which is where this gets serious.
When a person stakes their overall worth on a single judged domain, a setback stops being a specific failure and becomes a global judgment (Muñoz et al., 2023; Funke & Gustafsson, 2026). In elite athletes, performance-based self-esteem was linked to competitive anxiety and burnout, and here is the striking part: those links became negligible once shame following failure was accounted for (Funke & Gustafsson, 2026). Shame was the pathway. Not the losing. The shame about the losing.
And the self-scoring itself is unreliable. Rouault et al. (2021) found that people with low self-esteem underrate their own performance even when their objective performance is no worse than anyone else's. Meaning your reading of your ride is not neutral data. It is filtered through how you already felt about yourself before you got on.
One more finding, because it should be printed on every warm-up ring wall. In sport, cognitive anxiety shows only a small negative average relationship with actual performance, while self-confidence shows a considerably larger positive one (Woodman & Hardy, 2003). Anxiety is a far weaker predictor of how you will go than confidence is. Yet almost everyone spends their preparation trying to eliminate the anxiety instead of building the confidence.
The Reframe: The Verdict Slip
Here is the piece I keep returning to.
The judge hands you a slip of paper. On it are numbers and remarks about specific, observable, bounded events. Twenty meter circle not round. Needs more forward. Tension through the poll. Every line refers to something that happened in a small rectangle of sand over roughly five minutes.
Then you take that slip of paper to the trailer, and somewhere between C and the tack room you perform a translation nobody asked you to perform. "Needs more forward" becomes "I am not good enough to be here." A 62 becomes a statement about your competence, your years of work, your right to keep spending money on this, and in the worst cases your worth as a person.
That translation is the whole problem. Call it the Verdict Slip, since it slips twice: it is literally a slip of paper, and it slips its category, sliding from information about a ride into a verdict on a life.
The research supports this framing more directly than most reframes I offer. The literature converges on the finding that performance anxiety becomes most harmful specifically when evaluation is treated as a verdict on worth, and becomes far more tolerable when self-concept is broader and self-worth is less contingent on the judged domain (Li, 2026; Liao et al., 2023; Orth & Robins, 2022).
So the intervention is not to stop caring about scores. Caring is what got you good. The intervention is to catch the slip. To keep the score in the category it belongs to, which is information, and refuse to let it be promoted to a verdict it was never qualified to issue.
A judge can tell you your circle was oval. A judge cannot tell you who you are. Those are different jurisdictions, and the judge only has authority in one of them.
What Actually Helps a Rider Who Freezes at the Gate?
The evidence here is reasonably encouraging, and reasonably humble, so let me give you both halves.
Psychological interventions do reduce performance anxiety, though they move state anxiety, the situational kind, more reliably than trait anxiety, the dispositional kind (Niering et al., 2023). Treatment consistently outperforms control in musician trials, but the methods across studies remain uneven and the evidence base is not yet definitive (Nicholl & Abbott, 2025; Kinney et al., 2025; Fernholz et al., 2019). CBT-based approaches are the most studied and look beneficial without being conclusively proven (Fernholz et al., 2019).
There is a wrinkle in that data worth knowing. Some judged-recital programs lowered participants' self-reported anxiety without changing the judges' ratings at all, while other programs using cognitive restructuring and imagery improved both the anxiety and the judge-rated quality (Kinney et al., 2025). So feeling better and scoring better are not automatically the same project. I would argue that is fine, and even clarifying. Feeling better is a legitimate goal on its own, and you should not have to earn it with a higher percentage.
Three things look genuinely protective.
Self-efficacy, not calm. Higher self-efficacy is associated with lower performance anxiety, and interventions can meaningfully raise self-efficacy beliefs (Zelenak, 2024). Resilience seems to improve performance indirectly through self-efficacy and self-set goals, and reduces state anxiety by the same route (Etherton et al., 2020). Confidence in your capability does more work than the absence of nerves.
Repeated, supported exposure. Evaluation can function as graded exposure rather than as pure threat, building self-efficacy over time (Lupiáñez et al., 2021). Repeated exposure with support strategies has been shown to improve self-appraisal, at least modestly (Vietmeier et al., 2026). The catch is in the word supported. Exposure without support is just repeated punishment, and repeated punishment is where the aversion is built.
Mindset, specifically challenge versus threat. Anxiety worsens sharply when demands feel bigger than resources (Guyon et al., 2020). Synergistic mindset interventions, which combine a growth mindset about ability with a reframe of stress arousal as helpful rather than harmful, have been shown to improve stress responses under evaluation (Yeager et al., 2022; Mao et al., 2026). This is the closest thing the literature offers to a lever you can actually pull on a Saturday morning.
And then there is the piece the newer coaching work keeps emphasizing, which is not symptom reduction at all. Lubert et al. (2024) describe coaching for performing artists that centers self-awareness, acceptance, and kindness, held inside a coaching relationship built on mutual understanding and appreciation. Not "get rid of the fear." Something closer to "stop treating yourself like a defendant."
Six Steps You Can Take Before Your Next Show
1. Sort the score sheet into two piles. Physically. Circle every comment that describes an observable event. Cross out every conclusion you drew that the judge did not write. The second pile is not data. It is the Verdict Slip in action, and seeing it in your own handwriting takes most of the air out of it.
2. Build confidence rather than hunting calm. Self-confidence predicts performance considerably better than anxiety does (Woodman & Hardy, 2003), and self-efficacy is trainable (Zelenak, 2024). Practically: keep a written log of things you can now do that you could not do a year ago. Specific things. Read it before you ride, not after.
3. Reframe the arousal instead of fighting it. Believing that anxiety is harmful and uncontrollable predicts worse emotional profiles going into performance (Kaleńska-Rodzaj, 2020), and stress-can-be-helpful reframes improve stress responses under evaluation (Yeager et al., 2022). The racing heart is your body handing you fuel. It is not a verdict either.
4. Front-load the positive feedback. Receiving positive feedback first appears to buffer arousal to later negative feedback, meaning sequence and framing shape the threat response (Lipton et al., 2020). If you have a trainer who reviews your test with you, ask them to start with what worked. That is not fragility. That is applied science.
5. Get exposure, but never unsupported exposure. Schooling shows, judge's clinics, filmed rides watched with someone kind. Evaluation works as graded exposure when support is present (Lupiáñez et al., 2021; Vietmeier et al., 2026) and turns into aversion when it is not (Kinney et al., 2025). Choose the environment as deliberately as you choose the horse.
6. Watch for shame, not just nerves. Shame after failure is the pathway linking performance-contingent self-esteem to competitive anxiety and burnout (Funke & Gustafsson, 2026). If your post-show feeling is closer to humiliation than disappointment, the score has already been promoted to a verdict, and that is the thing to bring to a professional.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is performance anxiety a sign of weakness? No. It is a common, well-documented response to public, scored, hard-to-stop evaluation, and it appears across music, sport, classrooms, and interviews (Fernholz et al., 2019; Gómez-López & Sánchez-Cabrero, 2023). Research describes it as shaped by evaluative culture as much as by individual fragility, and it is frequently undertreated rather than overreported.
Does anxiety actually make you ride worse? Less than most people assume. A meta-analysis in sport found cognitive anxiety has only a small negative average link with performance, while self-confidence has a substantially larger positive one (Woodman & Hardy, 2003). Anxiety hurts most when arousal exceeds what the performer can tolerate (Gómez-López & Sánchez-Cabrero, 2023).
Why do I remember the one bad comment and forget the good ones? Because anxious individuals update self-evaluation more from negative feedback than positive feedback (Koban et al., 2023; Koban et al., 2017). This appears linked to reduced positive self-belief, meaning there is less positive evidence in the self-concept for the compliment to attach to (Hopkins et al., 2021). It is a learning bias, not a memory flaw.
Should I just show more to get over it? Only with support. Repeated evaluation helps when it works as graded exposure that builds self-efficacy (Lupiáñez et al., 2021; Vietmeier et al., 2026). Without support, repeated judgment tends to reinforce threat and can deepen aversion to performing altogether (Kinney et al., 2025). Volume alone is not treatment.
When is performance anxiety worth treating professionally? When it drives avoidance, when it produces shame rather than disappointment after a poor result, or when it has frozen a goal you still want. Psychological interventions reduce state anxiety with reasonable consistency, and CBT-based approaches have the strongest evidence so far (Niering et al., 2023; Fernholz et al., 2019).
The Close
Ride down centerline enough times and you will collect a drawer full of paper, all of it written by people who watched you for five minutes.
Those people were doing their job. The score is real, the standards are real, and the discipline is better for having them. This is not an argument against being judged. Being judged is how anyone gets good at anything that has a standard.
It is an argument about jurisdiction.
A judge has authority over your test. Over the geometry, the rhythm, the correctness of what happened in that arena on that day. That authority is genuine and it is also strictly bounded. It ends at the gate. It does not extend to your worth, your competence as a person, or your right to keep showing up, and the fact that it feels like it does is a trick of a nervous system doing exactly what nervous systems do under scrutiny (Albarracin et al., 2024; Koban et al., 2023).
So take the paper. Read it. Learn from it. Then put it in the drawer where it belongs, and go back to the horse, who has never once scored you and never will.
A score describes a ride. It has never described a rider.
